Our Manager in Hongkong has addressed the subject of raising the amount available by him from $4,000,000 to $5,000,000 and points out that if this

increase were sanctioned trouble both to him and to the

Colonial Treasurer would be lessened.

The arrangement at present in Hongkong is, that for any issue of not es in excess of the limit of $4,000,000 security shall be deposited with the Treasury therein the form of Coin or Bullion, or Coin and Bullion, equal to the whole value of such excess for the time being actually in circulation. This we do not wish to disturb in any way, but if the limit for the issue of notes by our Hongkong Branch could be raised to $5,000,000 much inconvenience would be saved

The appropriation of the :8,000,000 would then

be :-
